5 STEPS TO BATTLING MORNING FATIGUE
We all know what it’s like to snooze an alarm multiple times. Trying to peel open your eyes to take on your jam-packed day of responsibilities can be a challenge for some people. There’s nothing exciting about waking up in the morning, and feeling tired and sluggish, even if you got your full 8+ hours of sleep. There are numerous things you can change about your daily activities to help you battle that morning fatigue. Here are some steps to boost energy levels in the morning so that you are ready to take on the day:
Step 1: Avoid the Snooze Button, Reach for a Glass of Water Instead
Hitting the snooze button is one of the most common reasons people are late for work or meetings, or simply wake up frantic because they overslept. It may seem enticing to sleep for 5 more minutes, but research claims that getting fragmented sleep is less restorative than consolidated sleep and leads to sleepiness-related daytime impairment. In other words, you will feel sluggish and tired if you hit the snooze button because you didn’t get the full 90-minute sleep cycle required for you to hit your REM state. If you sleep for less than roughly 90 minutes, you will wake up during the REM stages, and your body won’t obtain the optimal rest it desires, resulting in elevated sleepiness during the day.
Instead of hitting the snooze button, try to place a glass of water next to the bed so you can reach for that instead. If you wake up fatigued and tired, it could be due to dehydration. Symptoms of dehydration include increased tiredness, mood disruptions, and altered cognitive abilities. Kick start your mornings with that glass of water the second you open your eyes!
Step 2: Perform Stretches to Get Your Muscles Moving
When you lay in your bed for 8+ hours getting your beauty sleep, your muscles are temporarily paralyzed for a duration of time during your REM stages of sleep, according to studies. By waking up and stretching, your muscles reactivate and release energy-stimulating endorphins to give you the boost of energy you so desperately need to get going! Therefore, yoga is typically performed early in the mornings, so that you can kick start your day off with more energy.
Step 3: Splash your Face/Body with Cool Water
There’s nothing like waking up in the morning and throwing cold water on your face to become more alert and awake. Some people will even take it a step further by jumping in a cold shower to guarantee they won’t be drowsy.
Step 4: Don’t Forget to Eat Breakfast
I’m sure you’ve heard the phrase, “Breakfast is the most important meal of the day.” Even if you don’t agree, food is our main supply of energy and provides us with essential fuel to power through our day. Unfortunately, research shows that nearly one-quarter of individuals in the United States skip breakfast daily.
